Thurs 2nd - 4th October 2008
The Fanny Waterman Collective presents
THE COHABITATION PROJECT
PART ONE:
URBAN SACRIFICES
"Those who love everything are despised by everything, as those who love a city, in its profoundest sense, become the shame of that city, the détraqués, the paupers; their good is incommunicable, outwitted, being the rudiment of a life that has developed, as in a man's body are found evidence of lost needs."
-Djuna Barnes, Nightwood
Urban Sacrifices follows the stories of those people who can most claim to be the city's appendages for
Its lost needs…
its back hair…
its tailbones…
its pointless nipples…
A hermit takes up residence just above britomart on a tennis umpire's chair, the better to understand why she wants to get away… Middle age American couples swamp the inner city with love and little green portraits of Benjamin Franklin as they take a scheduled break from their cruise ships, bumbags in tow... A thief of technological items ("for ideological reasons") realises he will always be alone, if only he can ignore the haunting chorus of his former lovers... Writers of letters to the editor band together to be better heard, but form a surprising new society... And all the while, will even the psychics from TV's Sensing Murder notice there's been a killing in the city?
The overlapping, ephemeral, but somehow recurrent and inescapable drudgery of interpersonal relations are taken for a spin in this genre mixing show that takes a tilt at everything from stand-up to opera.
The Fanny Waterman Collective formed in 2007 to bring cutting-edge performance-driven music to the world, and now after four highly regarded shows (The Fanny Waterman Collective presents the Stone Wall Crisis; The Fanny Waterman Collective in Space; Celebrate Lotte Lenya's 109th Birthday with the Fanny Waterman Collective and It's a Fanny Waterman Collective Beach Party!) they return bigger and better to inject their unique musical energy into the theatre with the new two-part Cohabitation Project. The FWC explores the tensions of city living like no others can.
In the lonely wailing of feral cats hopelessly marking and remarking their territory in our urban wastes, Urban Sacrifices finds a terrible beauty and transfers it to our daily lives.
